ABOUT US
The Tapay ranch was started
in 1900 by Allen's Great Granddad, Paul Schulz, a miner who
had come to the area to work. He wanted a place to
raise livestock and vegetables for when layoffs came at he
mine.
Paul was married in 1913 to
Ms. Drevenak, a widow with two children, Mary and Paul.
Mary wed Emil Tapay senior in the early twenties, also a
miner. At this point the ranch began to expand.
Emil and Mary also started a family at this time, raising
their children Joe, Emil Jr. and Helen.
Working with their parents,
Emil and Joe Tapay expanded the ranch to its present size
today. The two boys raising cattle under the Tapay
Bros. were very well known in the area. They saw the
largest changes in the cattle industry, going from horse
drawn plows, to modern farming equipment.
The current owners, Allen and
Teri Tapay continue the ranching tradition to this day, but
have decided to diversify into the guest home business.
Teri, realizing the natural beauty of the area, wanted to
share this unique area with you, our guests.
Depending on the time of year
you are staying on the ranch, you may see us doing a variety
of jobs. Winter has us feeding the animals in
anticipation of calving in the spring months of April and
May. Branding and fixing fences gives us the chance to
move cattle to pasture in the late spring. Haying is
the Tapay's summer chore, leading us to fall roundup and
vaccination prior to fall calf sales. The process
begins anew in the winter.
Time is taken out in hunting
season, as this is Allen and Teri's favorite pastime.
As your hosts we would be glad to show you anything of
interest throughout the year.
